Forehead Reduction Surgery Hairline Lowering Without The Scalpel, Stitches & ScarringWhat is the average size of a forehead? Typically, as a rough guide, four fingers is your average sized forehead, which is approximately 6-7cm for males and slightly under 6cm for females. Some people have thick, low hairlines that never change, whereas others have sparse, uneven hairlines that progressively creep back over time.

A high forehead can be considered attractive, particularly on women. However, when a hairline starts thinning, is receding noticeably or is uneven and is impacting your confidence or the way you feel about yourself, then hairline correction could be a solution. We explain the two main options for forehead reduction surgery or hairline lowering.

The Aim of Forehead Reduction Surgery/ Hairline Lowering

The goal of surgical intervention for a large forehead is first and foremost to reduce to size of the forehead. Additional benefits can include improving facial symmetry, strengthening the hairline and redesigning an uneven hairline. There are two main ways to lower a hairline, by strip removal and by hair transplant. We explain the differences below.

Two Very Different Surgeries

1. Strip removal

Hairline lowering using the strip removal method involves surgery under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic and sedation. An incision (a long cut with a scalpel) is made along the front of the hairline. Up to 5cm of forehead skin can be removed, thus bringing the hairline forward and reducing the size of the forehead. The incision is then stitched closed. This results in an unavoidable, long thin scar along the hairline.

Strip removal is more complicated than a hair transplant and carries a higher degree of risk such as infection, scarring, unnatural results and concerns with anaesthesia / sedation. Recovery is long, lasting two weeks with stitches removed at one week. Strip removal does not thicken the hairline, it simply moves forward what hair you already have.

Strip removal is not recommended for patients with thinning hair, anyone who suffers from keloid or hypertrophic scarring or those who cannot take two weeks off to recover.

2. Hair transplant

Forehead reduction or hairline lowering by hair transplant offers a solution with no incision, no stitches or scarring and the procedure is done with local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area. During a hair transplant, hair grafts are taken from the back and sides of the head (to be undetectable following the procedure) and are carefully transplanted into the new, redesigned, lower hairline. With Gro microsurgery, the precise angle, depth and direction of every hair is controlled by our highly-skilled doctors. The density and design of the hairline is carefully crafted, assisting to improve facial symmetry and 100% natural results are guaranteed. Gro is the only clinic in Australia to guarantee natural results.

At Gro, our technique is referred to as microsurgery as it is the most refined and delicate technique. Patients can return to work in as little as a couple of days following their procedure.
